A Gift of Art, a member of the Ontario Association of Art Galleries is offering an internship in a Marketing Manager position. The candidate will have an Arts back ground or a passion for the Arts underscored by formal education in marketing, university or college. This is a newly created position with a part time social media person who will provide assistance.
Our challenge in the time of COVID is to continue to provide our usual range of services while complying with all the restrictions and safety measures to combat this pandemic. To that end we are moving to on line classes, an on line store, an on line book club etc. Making this change requires positive communication with our followers, customers and students. It is also a major change for art students and teachers to find their knowledge base through a different medium. This will require a flexible and adept person who knows the basics and is accepting of the challenge to not only retain the galleries current audience but to seriously increase it.
In this semi-rural area, A Gift of Art is a cultural Centre with an Art Gallery, a retail gallery store, classes in many arts disciplines, a Drama section, a Photography club and a small group of poets. This mission is to support and promote local artists (must live within 35 miles [55k]) and expand the love of the arts in the Clarington region. Our website is www.agiftof-art.com.
We are a fully accessible organization with not only two ramps but also electronic door opens. We are ecologically responsible with paper bags, no plastic water bottles, stainless steel straws and a water permeable drive way and parking lot.
Newcastle is a charming area bordered to the south by Lake Ontario with its marina and beaches. The gallery is situated in a modestly converted 1855 farm house. The Village itself was incorporated in the mid-1800s. There is a very active historic society, a vibrant library, and many churches, one of the oldest horticultural societies, a Lions club and much more.
Newcastle was the birth place of The Massey Farm Equipment Company. In 1923 the Massey family donated the Hall (now known as the Newcastle Community Hall) which contained among other things a two room jail, a projection room for films, kitchens for catering and a lovely parkette.
Nearby Port Hope has a fantastic live theatre, Millbrook has the 4th line theatre, and Port Perry has theatre and of course is the home of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation. Bowmanville has big box stores and of course Oshawa has everything a city can offer including a University UOIT, a Community College and Trent University’s Oshawa Campus. Toronto is a mere hour away by GO train.
Newcastle has no public transport, but the GO bus provides regular service from Oshawa via Bowmanville.

A graduate in an arts marketing field, whether arts management, of marketing with a strong interest in the arts. Undergraduate from university or college.
Must have good computer skills, in Excel, Photoshop, uses of pdf. Jpeg etc. with an excellent understanding of social media. Skilled at formatting reports and marketing metrics/criteria is essential.
Must have excellent writing skills and command of the English language as spoken and written. A working knowledge of French is always useful
The building has two ramps, and electronic door openers. At present the employees are a mix of races, religions, ages and handicaps. We have an ASL translator, languages spoken are English, French, Dutch, German and Tagalog, among others. We have both female and male employees. We have a good rapport with the local First Nations People. We are heavily involved in the Newcastle’s of the World organization and are a very involved group in our local community, assisting with Canada Day events, seniors’ events, partnering with other charities and so on.
The interview process with be a predetermined series of questions including one which will provide us with some insight into the attitudes and philosophies of the candidate. Candidates will be short listed based on abilities as reported in their CV and their ability to work in Newcastle. (There is limited rental accommodation in this village) but a good selection in several nearby villages. Problem is transit.
The final selection will be made by some members of the Board of Directors along with the GM

The Marketing Manager will oversee the promotion of our organization by developing strategies and tactics to bolster its services, products and disciplines ultimately increasing market share.
We are looking for a flexible and versatile marketer who will be responsible for the growth of our audience, customers, students and followers.
Marketing Manager responsibilities include tracking and analyzing the performance of advertising campaigns, managing the marketing budget and ensuring that all marketing reflects the philosophies of this charitable organization. To be successful you will need knowledge of social media, web analytic tools and be able to turn creative ideas into marketing successes.
Finally you will help us build from our current parameters. We want to enlarge our boundaries and our presence through a wide range of on line and offline marketing campaigns.
- Develop strategies and tactics to get the word out about our company and drive increased traffic to our door.
- Develop successful marketing campaigns from inception to execution
- Experiment with various channels both paid and gratis, concerning pay per click campaigns, publicity, social media, performance management analytics etc.
- Produce valuable and engaging content for newsletters, website and print ads
- Build strategic relationships and partnerships with local industry players, agencies and artists
- Prepare and monitor the marketing budget
- Oversee and approve marketing material in conjunction with the General Manager
- Report on the performance of marketing campaigns
- Analyze performance data and adjust email and advertising campaigns accordingly
A degree or certificate in marketing with a passion and understanding of the vagaries of the arts.
