Over 700 Home Children were taken in by families in Clarke and Darlington Townships, now Clarington. They came from various ‘homes’ throughout England, homes that cared for homeless children, among them Bernardo Homes, but not limited to Bernardo’s.

Between the years of 1869 and 1949, children were sent to Canada to be domestic servants or farm labourers. In the beginning, children as young as 5 years old were sent, but after WW2 those sent out were older teens and young men who were homeless.

Thirty six of the later children have been featured in my book and it is from these children that I have taken their information to talk about on the Zoom talk on February 8th.
