August, 2017

There are so many exciting things happening at the gallery. The planning sessions are in full swing. Last night there was a meeting about drama and some very exciting ideas came out of that.

First, how is your summer going? Although the rain is still with us it does save on the plant watering. The gardens are very lush. Lawns are growing really well, in fact it is hard to remember a summer when by August the lawns weren’t turning brown from a lack of moisture.

Matthew Gilmour, who joined us recently, is offering a coding camp from 2:00 ‘til 4:00, August 14th to 18th. This course is specifically built for 12 to 14 or 15 year olds. In an increasingly digital world it is important to learn how that world works and to give them the tools to put their creativity to work. Basic web coding will also be a necessity in the future so give your kids a head start with this one week session. Sign-up online at agiftof-art.com/classes or give us a call.

The Orono Fair is September 7, 8, 9 & 10. If you have never visited the fair, it is an experience you really must try. There is everything from displays of local schools projects, a fiddling contest, horses galore, tractor pulls, chickens, cows, farm machinery, grand stand performances and finally a great side show with enough rides to make anyone dizzy. We will be located in the

Arena. The most up to date class brochures will be available and a good assortment of the artist’s creations will be on display. Drop by for a visit.

Summer camp is going well. We have an excellent ratio of roughly 1 adult to every three kids although it can vary. That high ratio helps the children feel comfortable and adds to their success rate at art projects. What does that do? It builds confidence – makes them satisfied and encourages them to learn. There are still some spaces in the August series. You can sign up online at agiftof-art.com/kids-summer-camp.

Are you wondering about taking a class this fall? Saturday, September 16th from 10:00 am to 2:00 we will have a ‘Meet the Teacher’ open house. Drop by, talk to the teacher , learn more about the course content and get the answers to your questions. You can also sign-up on the spot if you would like.

Drama will be split into two groups this year. From 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm starting Wednesday , September 20, Adam will work with the 6 – 12 year olds. 7:30 – 8:30 will be the youth group for those persons over 14. Some people with experience will also be in that group. There will only be a nominal fee this year. The participant must be a member of AGOA. The stipend for
the fall session will be $30.00. Detailed information about Drama will be available shortly. Adam will be at the ‘Meet the Teacher’ event, so you can pepper him with any queries you may have.

The Seniors Speakers Series is being put together to be ready for an October start. The dance company, PKS Elite, is gearing up for their start in early September. While the Photography Club are preparing their schedule; the quilters are welcoming new participants for their Tuesday sewing sessions. In general, classes start the third week of September. You can sign up online at agiftof-art.com/classes, over the phone or by dropping in to the gallery for a visit.

Hector practicing his golf game

There is a golf tournament September 21st at the Newcastle Golf Course. Breakfast, a steak dinner (around 2:00pm when everyone is off the course), green fees, shared golf cart, and 18 holes of great golf are all included in the $95.00 per golfer fee. Why are we doing this? As a stand alone, charitable organization, finding start up funds to get a new program off the ground is difficult. The plan is to have an after school program a couple of days a week. Teachers, supplies and advertising are some of the set up costs that must be covered. There are great prizes including a very special hole in one prize so ask for some details and sign up a foursome. Are you interested in sponsoring a hole, a cart or donating a prize? We would love to hear from you!

We will be closed Monday, August 7, but open and waiting for you back on Tuesday. Drop by and see the new art on display.

Look forward to seeing you soon!
